Class Hours

All-day courses typically run from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with a one-hour break for lunch, and two 15-minute breaks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.  Our trainers will be present from 8:00 am and remain on site until 5:00 pm each day to allow for set up time in the morning and allow users time for additional questions or to help users complete their class exercises.

Workshops and delta training classes run mornings from 8:30 am to noon, and afternoons from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm, with a single 15-minute break per session.  Our trainers will be present 30 minutes prior to the start of each workshop, and will remain for an additional hour at the end of each day to allow time for individual questions from anybody in your organization, not just those who were present during the workshops.

Workshops are designed for experienced end users and administrators and give attendees the opportunity to pick our brains.  We wrote the book - so who better to ask!!  These ad-hoc sessions are aimed at helping your users make the most of Discoverer.  Users should bring to class whatever problems, issues or difficult worksheets that they would like to see resolved.

Note: All-day courses include pre-packaged course materials which will either be brought by the trainer or shipped in advance at no extra cost to you.  Installations and upgrades will generally be all-day affairs with our expert on site from 8:30am each day until done.  Simple installations and upgrades should take one day, with more complex requirements taking between two and three days.  Contact us to get the ball rolling.

End-User Layers used in training

All standard end-user courses are done using an End User Layer based on the Armstrong-Smith Global Widgets database as used in the Oracle Discoverer 10g Handbook. The administration course uses the Global Widgets database and teaches users how to build the EUL that is used in our book. The underlying Global Widgets database has been specially designed to incorporate data that reflects true business scenarios.

SunGard end user training is done using a simplified version of the SungardHE ODS 3.0.

Generally, we use your own data during delta training and workshops, mingled with the occasional use of the Global Widgets data as used in the Oracle Discoverer 10g Handbook.  In order to maximize the effectiveness of the delta training, Armstrong-Smith Consulting recommends that delta sessions be restricted to experienced users of the older version.  In order to maximize the effectiveness of the workshop training, Armstrong-Smith Consulting recommends that workshops be restricted to specific functional areas or departments.  For example, why not have a workshop for your order entry users, and then take another one for your fixed asset users, with a third one specially for your finance users. When on-site we can even conduct one-on-one sessions for those users who cannot leave their desk to attend formal classroom training.

If you want customized courses designed around your own database we are happy to work with you to make this happen.  You should budget for approximately 2 days of on-site work per day of customized training.

Customized Training

Armstrong-Smith Consulting is one of that rare breed of companies that will customize its training to handle your needs. Because we know that you are unique we will either customize one of our existing courses or create a brand new Discoverer training course to meet your exact requirements. When we have finished and delivered the training, you will own the material and we will hand over to you all of the original documents that we created on your behalf.  You can then either take over the training from us, handing it to your own training department, or you can have us deliver the training on your behalf. We will go anywhere in the world, your wish is our command.

Whether you are using Discoverer 3.1, 4.1, 9iAS or 10g, whether you are using standard mode or Apps mode, and whether you are using Desktop, Plus or Viewer makes no difference to us. We have experience and training material for all versions of Discoverer.

Our costs for customizing vary depending upon the course that you want us to customize or create on your behalf and the number of day's training that you request. We will need to spend approximately two days on-site with you for every day of customized training that you request and three days for every day of brand new Discoverer training that we create especially for you. We want to work with you again in the future and so we only charge what we need to charge, nothing more.
